This book examines the practice of ritual sacrifice as depicted in the literature of the ancient Israelites through lenses of Biblical studies, anthropology, and linguistics. Taking as its model the grammar of natural languages, it is argued that rituals are governed by finite sets of implicit, rigorous rules that are in part unconsciously internalized. However, rather than borrowing categories such as syntax and morphology from linguistics, four operativecategories are abstracted from the biblical ritual texts: zoemics--the study of the classes of animals used in ritual sacrifice; jugation--the rules governing the joining of animal and non-animal materials; hierarchics--the tiered structuring of sacrificial sequences; and praxemics-- the analysis of thephysical activity comprising sacrificial procedures.
